The Art of Writing is a still life representing
the different stages of the writing process. These stages include the
gestation period, symbolized by the accumulation of past writings shown
by the scrolls; the writing process, shown by the pen and paper writ
upon (similar to the paper of the scrolls), linking present to past
and the artist's inheritance of ideas; and the final stage of compilation,
typified by the books depicted. The flickering flame of the candle is
a symbol of thought, ever-present in the writing process, while the
bouquet of flowers in different stages of bloom represents the different
aspects of the writing process. Inked on the sheet of paper are the
opening lines to The House of Seven Gables, by Nathanial Hawthorne,
one of the artist's favorite authors.
